I'm often asked why I only paint women. The short answer is because I am one. Every painting is, at some level, autobiographical. Most all of them feature a single woman in an intimate, interior, domestic setting. I try to capture those "everyday emotional moments" that we all experience.

As a painter, the landscape is a source of continuing fascination for me. In the early morning or late afternoon I roam the deep south geography that is my home. That's when the light is most dramatic and, for me, it's always about the light.

From time to time, I like to take a break from large canvases. Working on a small scale often presents intriguing challenges. Most of the small paintings I make are still life compositions but occasionally I will paint a very small landscape. Each piece in this collection was completed in eight to ten hours. I hope you enjoy them.

For many years I resisted still life painting. In my early work, I was almost completely focused on figurative painting. As I have gotten older, I have come to a new appreciation of still life painting, both as someone who looks at art all the time and someone who makes paintings.
There are the formal elemnets that appeal to my orderly nature. There is the wealth of color and texture available when one combines, fabric, fruit and crystal, for instance. My still life work has grown from small studies to large, major pieces. They now comprise a large portion of the paintings I produce.

I wanted to have a place on the site where those who are interested could see the developmnet of a painting from blank canvas to the finished piece. If you click through this collection, you'll see the different stages of this painting. At each step, I explain what I've done. I hope you enjoy seeing how I make a painting.

This collection of note cards is something I'm proud of. Some of my favorite paintings are shown on these 5 x 7 inch cards. They are printed on heavy paper that ink takes to beautifully. Blank inside, there is room enough for a letter or a short note.
They come boxed in sets of 10 cards and 12 envelopes. The cards are available in boxes of a single image or an assortment. The cost per box is $15 which includes shipping. To purchase, simply call me at 256-534-4202 or email me at vaughnart@bellsouth.net. I'll gladly take your order and ship your cards to you with an invoice inclosed. Satisfaction is guaranteed.
